Currently, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performs an excerpt from The Lark Ascending as part of "Ailey Highlights." I really love this ballet, so instead of uploading an excerpt like I usually do, here is the entire ballet, performed in 1982. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Up until a few years ago, I had never seen an AAADT performance. Then one day, while looking through videos at the public library, I came across an AAADT video. I can't recall why, but I decided to check it out. Whoever had the video before me didn't rewind it all the way, so although Night Creature was the first performance on the video, I first saw some of The Lark Ascending.
At first I liked the fact that someone had set a ballet to Ralph Vaughan Williams's beautiful music, but then became mesmerized by the dancing and ended up watching it two or three more times. After viewing the other three ballets on the video, which included Cry and Revelations, I was hooked.
Since then, I've purchased every AAADT video and photo book made available to the public. I also attend at least two of the New York City Center performances every December (Night Creature was the first AAADT ballet I saw live). Of all the wonderful Ailey ballets I've seen, The Lark Ascending is still my favorite.
Choreographed in 1972, The Lark Ascending explores hunting as a metaphor for male-female coupling, suggesting the transformative ability of heterosexual partnership to enable growth from puberty to maturity.
